Cats, with their luxurious fur coats and limited ability to regulate body temperature, can easily become overheated and distressed in hot weather. As responsible cat owners, it's our responsibility to provide them with a cool and comfortable environment during the scorching summer months. In this blog post, we'll explore effective strategies to help keep your cat cool, content, and safe when the temperatures soar. Let's get started!

Instead, they rely on panting, seeking out cool surfaces, and grooming to dissipate heat. By understanding these cooling mechanisms, we can implement appropriate measures to support their natural cooling process. To keep your cat cool in hot weather, consider the following ideas:

By implementing these ideas, you can help your feline friend beat the summer heat and ensure their well-being. Here are some additional ideas for keeping your cat cool in the summer heat:
1. Elevate Beds: Provide your cat with elevated beds or hammocks positioned near windows or in cooler areas of your home. This allows them to enjoy the breeze and avoid direct contact with hot surfaces.

2. Frozen Treats: Prepare cat-friendly frozen treats using ingredients like low-sodium chicken broth or tuna water. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays or freeze it in silicone moulds. Offer these refreshing treats to your cat for a cool and tasty snack.
3. Wet Towels or Cooling Pads: Dampen a towel with cool water and gently stroke your cat's fur. Alternatively, use a cooling pad designed specifically for pets. Place the towel or cooling pad in your cat's favourite resting spots to provide a cooling sensation.

4. Air-Conditioned or Cool Rooms: If you have air conditioning or a cooler room in your home, create a cat-friendly space where they can escape the heat. Set up their bed, toys, and water in this area, ensuring it remains comfortable and cool throughout the day.
5. Frozen Water Bottles: Wrap frozen water bottles in a cloth and place them near your cat's favourite lounging spots. They can lean against the bottles or lie next to them for a refreshing cool-down.
6. Grooming: Regularly brush your cat's fur to remove excess hair and prevent matting, which can hinder their ability to regulate body temperature. This helps improve airflow and keeps them cooler.

7. Limit Outdoor Time: During the hottest parts of the day, limit your cat's outdoor time to prevent overheating. Instead, encourage playtime and exercise indoors, where it's cooler and safer for them.
8. Avoid Leaving Cats in Cars: Never leave your cat unattended in a parked car, even for a short period. Cars heat up rapidly, and the temperature inside can become dangerous, leading to heatstroke.

Cats are territorial creatures of habit and can find catteries very stressful and upsetting. It is generally agreed by pet professionals that they are most relaxed and comfortable staying in their own homes when "parents" go away for short or long breaks. Travelling to and from catteries can also be stressful for both you and your cat. Our Cat Sitting service means your cat can stay home whenever you are away.
Since the beginning of 2019 CitiKiti has also offered cat behaviour therapy as well. Cat behaviour therapy can help if your cat is urine marking, stressed, anxious, aggressive, destructive or urinating or defecating outside the litter tray. The CitiKiti Cat Behaviourist can also offer advice on getting cats to get along, getting cats and dogs to live together peacefully, and taking care of kittens or older cats. Our Cat Behaviourist offers home consultations in London and in some cases worldwide video consultations work as well.
AREAS WE COVER

Cat food: cats are obligate carnivores which means they need to eat meat in order to survive. Eating a vegetarian or vegan diet is not an option for your cat. Cats depend on the nutrients found in meat, most notably taurine and arginine. For this reason it is important to feed your cat a quality diet supplemented with a few treats. Ask your vet or pet shop for advice about their range of cat food and treats.
