Why does my cat knead my lap when I am stroking it?

Time for a Wednesday Why?

We all love when our cat sits in our lap and kneads our lap. They often purr while doing it. Cats also often do this in their beds or on their blankets. They are clearly happy when they do this, but why do they do this?

Kittens knead their mother when they are suckling. This behaviour has positive associations for the cat: when they were suckling kittens they felt warm and safe and were being fed when they kneaded their mother.

Although you don’t feed your cat when they knead you, this behaviour is a sign they feel safe and secure with you. Now we love our cats even more!
